Whisky Stones: I'm on a Whisky Diet and I've Lost 3 Days Already

whisky stones - gifts for him
I saw these on Firebox the other week, and before you could say "down the hatch" I had ordered a set. Now, I'm not a huge whisky drinker, but I do like the occasional drop on special occasions. You know, birthdays, weddings, urm, Fridays?
Whisky Stones chill your drink without diluting it. They are the ice cube replacement for the whisky connoisseur.
They are made from natural soapstone which is non-porous. Plus, rather importantly they have no taste of their own. You simply chill them in the freezer for a couple of hours before use, then pop them into your glass like you would ice cubes.
You get 9 cubes in one set, together with a little bag to keep them separate from your frozen chilli-con-carne left-overs.
I can certainly see the advantages of using these clever little stones, but couldn't help thinking it's quite a lot of hassle. So, like all good reviewers, I had to test them out. I popped out and bought a fine bottle of Glenfiddich single malt scotch whisky, perfect for the job.
Now, some people say you shouldn't even chill whisky to appreciate the fine balance of flavours. I say, I prefer it a little chilled, so there.
After sipping down a glass for about 30 minutes, I started feeling light headed, relaxed, and a little horny. As for the Whisky Stones, well they had kept my drink well chilled, but were beginning to warm to room temperature. I got one more drink out of them before they were warm and needed replacing. So I'd say they last about an hour.
You get 9 stones in a set, so this might give you about 3 hours of drinking time (using 3 stones per glass). That is, if you're drinking alone. Which, I don't recommend by the way.
I suppose you can put the warm stones back into the freezer while you carry on drinking. Then you can drink cold whisky all night (or at least while you remain conscious).
They are quite hard, and on a couple of occasions they banged into my teeth. Don't say I didn't warn you. But it does feel kind of cool (excuse the pun) to be drinking with actual rocks in your glass.
Thankfully these Whisky Stones don't require much cleaning, just a quick rinse under the tap. Mine haven't been stained and don't in any way smell of the Glenfiddich, so thumbs up there.
Are they better than ice cubes? This is probably the wrong question. The practicalities should be overlooked. This is a gift product, and they're a great gift for a whisky drinker.
I personally might prefer ice cubes, as I've decided I like watering down the whisky a little, but maybe I'm just a wuss. After a few more years perhaps I'll be able to handle it better.
Whisky Stones can also be used with other drinks, both alcoholic and soft. But I'm not sure what else, besides whisky, you wouldn't want watered down with ice cubes.
