Digital Photo Key Chain Review: A Wee Bit Rubbish If You Ask Me

digital photo key chain - gifts for him - gifts for her
This product is kind of an extension to the digital photo frame craze which happened 2 or 3 years ago. I must admit, I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now (even if you can put it on a key ring).
The Digital Photo Key Chain (as you can probably guess) lets you store photos on a small device which can attach to your keys. They are displayed in a slideshow (which includes crazy image to image transitions which remind me of an 80's episode of Top Of The Pops!) through a 1.5 inch LCD screen. The 1 megabyte memory (wow) allows you to store up to 100 tiny images.
There is a built in rechargeable battery, which we'll get around to testing later, maybe. The Key Chain comes with software which is very simple to use. You select images (in whatever format) from your hard drive, and upload them to the device. They are automatically scaled down to 128x128 pixels, and you can crop, rotate and zoom with the software.
It's connected to your PC/MAC with a USB cable. This is also how the battery gets charged.
I don't want to be too negative about the Digital Photo Key Chain, but I have a feeling I'm going to be. It just seems pointless to me. Any modern SmartPhone can do exactly the same, but better, displaying higher resolution images on a larger screen. Also, I don't know about you guys, but I tend to be pretty rough with my keys. I toss them on the table when I get in, chuck them to my mate if he needs to borrow them. I wouldn't want this cumbersome thing attached to them.
Before it arrived, I was hoping it was going to be solid and well-built. But I'm not sure it could survive a drop from pocket-height onto, say, tarmac. It's quite light and I imagine the screen getting scratched up pretty quick.
Having said all this, it might just be a nice gift to your grandpa, if they don't have a SmartPhone, and don't throw their keys around (most grandpa's I know, don't do this). Otherwise, perhaps a nice gift for a technophobe, or someone that desperately wants to see photos of you 24 hours a day (your clingy partner?).
I personally, would never buy it for myself. I'd probably never buy it for a gift either, not a serious gift. But as it's cheap, I think I might buy it as a comedy gift. I can image my girlfriend finding it funny if I bought her this, and stuck 100 photos of myself on it.
